I watched Beginners on the last day of 2011, and fittingly, it was without a doubt my favorite film of the year. It is important, and visually stunning, and heartfelt, deeply funny, and true. I could watch it over and over, and I probably will.
Oliver’s dad: Well let’s say . . . let’s say since you’re a little, and you’ve always dreamed of someday getting a lion. And you wait, and you wait, and you wait, and you wait in the lion doesn’t come. Then along comes the giraffe. You can be alone, or you can be with the giraffe.
Oliver: I’d wait for the lion.
Oliver’s dad: That’s why I worry about you.
