DeYoung Museum, San Francisco
I was in San Francisco working on the new store space last week, but I managed to steal a few hours away for inspiration hunting at museums and galleries. I finally made it to the de Young Museum, and the controversial Herzog & de Meuron designed building is just stunning. I was especially taken with the wood benches and and banquettes throughout.
The paint color on the wall here is amazing.
Al Farrow sculpture’s The Spine and Tooth of Santo Guerro, a gothic cathedral constructed of ammunition and guns, with a human spine running through it. Creepy and beautiful.
The Wild Swan by Alexander Pope is a true tromp l’oeil. I was convinced the painting was taxidermy, until I was a few feet away.
My friend Evan encouraged me to take the time to visit observation level in the de Young’s tower and it was truly worth it. Some of the best views of SF around.
